Dry needling is a treatment technique where fine, single-use acupuncture needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles), ligaments or near nerves. 

It is a safe and effective treatment modality that can decrease tightness, increase blood flow and reduce local and referred pain. Providers use solid needles that don't contain any kind of medication. This is why the technique is called “dry.” Nothing is injected into your body.

It typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. If you are receiving other treatments at the same time, such as massage, your appointment can last 30 to 90 minutes.

Usually a healthy muscle feels very little discomfort with insertion of the needle, however, if the muscle is sensitive and shortened or has active trigger points within it, the person may feel a sensation much like a muscle cramp, which is often referred to as a 'twitch response'.
